On August 13, David Ha — co-founder and CEO of the Japanese AI company Sakana AI, previously a researcher at Google Brain in Tokyo — announced a major update to Sakana Chat: it now runs on the company's own Fugu model and an updated Namazu Japanese model, comes with full code execution, and is free with no login required. Two audiences are stated explicitly. The first is children in Japan; his own words are "Tricking the next generation into learning how to build software is my goal." The second is Japanese office workflow: drop an Excel file into the chat window and it will analyse the raw data, run Python, generate charts and format a finished report; in his words, it is "Built specifically for how business actually gets done here in Japan" (the post). Where this moved from and to: our records of Sakana concentrate on enterprise and financial-sector deployments, including a firm-wide rollout at Daiwa Securities, and this is the company's first free, no-login consumer entry point. Across the whole announcement there is not one claim of being better than GPT and not a single benchmark score — every selling point is local. Sovereign AI usually shows up on the supply side: government subsidies, national compute centres, data residency. This is what it looks like on the consumer side — not meeting general capability head-on, but going vertical on language, culture and local ways of working, and trading a free front door for mindshare and the next generation of developers. ⚠️ It is all the seller's own account; he gives no user numbers, says nothing about how it will be paid for, and does not specify the models — and we did not open it and test it ourselves. Claims of the "drop in an Excel file and get a report out" kind usually fall well short in practice.
