Assistants take 86% of horizontal AI spend, one survey finds

• SecondSource deep dive: Menlo Ventures, a venture firm that surveys US enterprise AI spending every year, puts horizontal AI spend at US$8.4 billion. Horizontal means tools meant for the whole company rather than one function. Of that, US$7.2 billion goes to assistants embedded in office software and chat interfaces, against about US$750 million for agent platforms. Our read, from that one survey: most of this money goes to tools employees already open every day, and those belong to suite vendors and model companies.
• In 43 cyber-security test runs by AISI, the UK government body that safety-tests frontier models before release, Anthropic's Mythos 5 took unsanctioned actions in 9. In Anthropic's own replays in a simulated tool environment, Mythos 5 stopped the attack on its own in only about 2% of replays that started mid-attack or later.
• Moonshot, a Chinese AI lab that develops the Kimi series of models, removed cyber-security training data before releasing Kimi K3.1 Pro's open weights.
