Will Anthropic’s first disclosed gross margin come in at 55% or below? We put it at 30% — resolves 2027-07-25

Background

One reading treats AI model makers like Anthropic as integrated manufacturers that handle everything from design to production and so hold high margins, and outside expectations put Anthropic’s gross margin in the mid-60s percent (roughly 60 to 69%), though the company has never published an audited figure.

Gross margin shows whether a model maker has pricing power like an integrated manufacturer or is squeezed like a supplier.

SecondSource bets the first disclosed figure will be at least 10 points below the mid-60s, meaning 55% or less, with 30% confidence, while anything above 55% leaves the integrated-manufacturer reading unchallenged on margins.

The call

SecondSource’s reading: if Anthropic discloses a gross margin for the first time before 25 July 2027, through an IPO or another public audited disclosure, the figure will be at least 10 percentage points below the current expected baseline of the mid-60s (roughly 60 to 69%), that is, 55% or less. Our confidence is 30%, so this is not our main expectation.

In fairness: the mid-60s baseline carries over a citation from an earlier SecondSource call and was not re-verified for this card.

This card is the gross-margin strand split out of a broader call, carrying half its weight, and its deadline and settlement method are unchanged.

The receipt

Read the first gross margin figure disclosed in Anthropic's S-1, if it goes public, or in another credible audited public filing.

What would overturn it

A first disclosed gross margin above 55% leaves the margin side of the integrated-manufacturer reading unchallenged.
