Only a 30% chance a cross-vendor agent layer becomes the enterprise standard — resolves 2027-07-14

Scheduled check: 2027-07-14

Our earlier call, under recheck · Written on Jul 31, 2026

Background

The debate: when companies deploy AI agents, the control system wrapped around the model (the harness that lets it use tools and finish multi-step tasks) can come from the model maker or from a vendor-neutral common layer that can swap models, such as Databricks’ Omnigent.

Why it matters: if a common layer becomes the standard, models turn into replaceable parts and the model makers lose the lock-in that their own harnesses give them.

Who is on each side: another SecondSource call holds that every layer of the industry wants to integrate on its own, while the common-layer camp bets that enterprises will choose the vendor-neutral layer.

The call

SecondSource’s reading: for a vendor-neutral agent layer (a meta-harness) to count as the de facto standard by 14 July 2027, at least two Fortune 500 or similarly sized enterprises must publicly attest by name that they have adopted one. We put the chance of that at only 30%.

This card deliberately shares its test and deadline with an earlier SecondSource card on the same question, so the same event is not scored twice under two different rules.

We did not run a fresh web check of the current state for this card; the reading will be taken at the deadline.

What would overturn it

Fewer than 2 named enterprise attestations means the everyone-integrates-it-themselves view continues to hold.

Correction to the settlement rule

Wording fix on 2026-08-03; the settlement rule itself was not changed. The settlement condition and the call used to say "same rule as another card" by internal card number, which readers cannot look up; they now spell out the date and the rule (at least two Fortune 500 or similar-size companies publicly vouching for adoption means the common layer became the de facto standard; the window still runs to 2027-07-14). No result had been seen. The original wording stays in our ledger and in the public mirror's version history.
