Neutral AI model routers will hold up: OpenRouter's weekly volume won't collapse — resolves 2027-07-27

Scheduled check: 2027-07-27

Our earlier call, under recheck · Written on Jul 31, 2026

Background

The debate: big AI labs sell model access to developers through APIs while also building their own apps that compete with those customers, like a chip foundry that also sells its own branded chips.

Why it matters: when the supplier competes with its customers, neutrality itself becomes scarce, which gives platforms that route developers across many models a reason to exist.

Who is on each side: one camp expects labs selling direct to squeeze out the middle layer; SecondSource reads neutral routers such as OpenRouter as holding their volume.

The call

SecondSource’s reading: through 2027-07-27, the weekly token volume handled by OpenRouter, or an equivalent neutral multi-model router, will not fall more than 30% from its July 2026 baseline, meaning it stays at or above 17.5 trillion tokens a week.

The baseline is the 25 trillion tokens a week we cited at the time. That figure was carried over from an earlier deep-dive and was not rechecked against a current reading when this call was written. Our confidence is 0.45, below even odds.

The same deep-dive recorded OpenRouter's $113 million Series B, which we read as the first time the market put a price on the neutral distribution layer.

What would overturn it

A decline of 30% or more, or the platform being acquired by a major lab and sidelined, weakens the neutral-distribution-layer argument.
