AI agents' CPU work is splitting from GPUs; AMD should report CPU-only rack deliveries — resolves 2027-06-30

Scheduled check: 2027-06-30

Our earlier call, under recheck · Written on Oct 15, 2026

Background

The debate: AI agents, which call tools and run code to finish tasks on their own, need lots of CPU power for that work on top of the GPUs running the model, and at the Open Compute Project event on 2026-10-12, AMD, Nvidia, Intel and Arm all showed rack products for it that sit apart from the GPU.

Why it matters: if this layer really splits off, data center capacity and power have to be planned as two pools, GPUs for the model and CPUs for execution, and the choice of CPU supplier comes loose from the GPU.

Who is on each side: all four vendors are pushing racks built for agent execution, but buyers so far purchase general CPU capacity and none has publicly bought such a rack, while SecondSource expects AMD to report deliveries in its earnings.

The call

SecondSource’s reading: the execution work of AI agents is splitting off from GPU inference, the computing that produces a model's answers, and becoming CPU capacity bought on its own.

The supply side is in place: four vendors launched rack products at the same event. AMD's Helion CPU-only rack holds up to 32,768 CPU cores, and the press release says it is dedicated to agent execution and connects to separate inference infrastructure, with availability planned for November 2026.

Demand has not caught up. Meta is buying tens of millions of Graviton5 cores from AWS for agents, and Microsoft is building CPU and GPU capacity separately, but both are buying general CPU capacity; no one has publicly bought an agent rack as a product.

So our test: by 2027-06-30, an AMD quarterly earnings press release will say that Helion CPU-only racks have been delivered or deployed to customers.

The receipt

Thirty days after AMD's first-quarter 2027 earnings press release (expected in early May 2027), check word for word the Data Center section of each quarterly press release from Q3 2026 through Q1 2027 for a statement that Helion CPU-only racks have been delivered or deployed to customers.

What would overturn it

If no AMD quarterly earnings press release within the deadline mentions delivery or deployment of Helion CPU-only racks, 'the agent rack is a real product layer' falls back to being a vendor narrative, and the reading in the first section of SecondSource's deep report of October 15, 2026 is void.
