"Does AI let the weak catch up with the strong, or let the strong pull further ahead?" A CEO, citing no research, described the same split that five academic papers add up to.

Aaron Levie co-founded and runs Box, a cloud content-management company. On August 20 he weighed in on "expert or generalist in the AI era", and the argument comes in three moves. First he concedes the leveling: "AI makes it 10X easier to get started with any kind of task." His second move claims an expert premium on judgment: "having the right judgment for how to direct the agent... all requires a high degree of skill." Then, in a third move, he holds that AI itself accelerates skill acquisition. His conclusion, though, is one unsplit sentence: "AI will be a technology that exacerbates differences in skill levels because the experts have far more leverage than ever before." The skill leveler (born 2023, old news by 2026)on tasks with a quality template, AI pulls the weaker toward the template — the direction replicates across writing, customer service, legal and creative work
The fight over the shape of the distribution (ongoing)what is leveled work still worth — commodity repricing, an escalator, or a kingmaker?

Open ?

Path Aescalator, everyone rises in proportion (the only randomized trial that directly measured senior people, METR, found the reverse, −19%, n=16, one field: limited weight but zero support)
Path Bkingmaker, a few AI power users take all (the most-cited empirical anchor, Toner-Rodgers, was disavowed by MIT; narrow kingmaking has only selection-biased market observations left, no clean evidence)
