Levie: stronger models let apps specialize; he shows no data
Box CEO Aaron Levie argues that as models get stronger, the application layer gains more room to specialize by domain. This is Levie's personal judgment, with no data attached. Box is a cloud service for managing enterprise content. Levie was replying to the X account @signulll, which argued that the stronger the model, the less a product has to do. Levie writes that while model capability was limited, the application layer could only be a "wrapper," meaning a thin app that puts an interface around a model. Levie goes on: when agents use tools, tasks run for hours or days, workflows have to be redesigned and model routing has to be split by domain, the "specialization of these systems goes up more." Levie names security, life sciences, healthcare, finance and manufacturing (Aaron Levie, 2026-10-20). Levie also writes that the closer a use is to the labs' core use cases, the harder it is for the application layer to differentiate through specialization. Box is an application-layer company, so Levie has an interest here. Our reading: whether specialization in a given domain actually holds off the labs depends on whether that domain has data and workflows the labs can't get. How we checked →
