Databricks speeds a fine-tune about 6x; it's one measurement

A Databricks engineering post says a Qwen 3.8 27B fine-tuning run went from 7 hours 44 minutes to 1 hour 17 minutes, about 6x faster, even though GPU utilization already read 98%. The post says: "The standard GPU utilization metric only counts the percentage of the time the GPU was doing anything" (Databricks, 2026-10-14). That metric shows whether the GPU is busy, not how much useful work each pass does. Databricks' diagnosis was that the CPU kept dispatching large numbers of small, fragmented operations to the GPU. Merging many small operations into one dispatch cut the number of dispatches to 1/15 and gave a 3.7x speedup. Packing several short samples into one row gave a further 1.6x. The two multiply to about 6x overall. This is a single measurement by Databricks on its own platform, promoting its own product, and the post doesn't measure what sample packing does to model quality. How we checked →
