Nadella touts Maia 300's 40% gain; the blog only expects it

Microsoft's official blog says Microsoft "expects" Maia 300 to produce 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems; CEO Satya Nadella's post states the claim per watt, in the present tense. The October 13 issue's chips section covered Maia 300's rack specs and the 40% figure. What's new today is reading the two originals side by side. Nadella's post says Maia 300 "delivers 40% more tokens per watt compared to leading GPU-based systems" (Satya Nadella, 2026-10-12). The blog post is by Scott Guthrie, Microsoft's executive vice president of Cloud + AI. It says Microsoft expects Maia 300 to produce 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems, with production deployment starting in 2027 (Microsoft official blog, 2026-10-12). Per watt and per megawatt differ only in unit; the ratio is the same. The blog frames the 40% as an expectation. Nadella's post states it as already achieved. Neither names the GPU systems compared, the workload, the precision or how power was measured. No third party has measured the performance. Maia 300's architecture documentation hasn't been reviewed, and the comparison baseline may be in it. How we checked →

Concept illustration: an open book lies on a beige tabletop; on its left page stands a black server rack with rows of horizontal slots topped by a tent card lettered GPU SYSTEM, and on its right page a red-orange rack topped by a tent card lettered MAIA 300, with a larger card behind it showing a symbol of four red, green, blue and yellow squares and the lettering MICROSOFT. A cable from each rack runs to a small two-socket outlet box between them, and a pile of blank speech bubbles lies in front of each rack, the right-hand pile larger, against a pale background with a pink curved shape at upper right.
