Shopify lets agents check out anywhere; it gives no figures

Shopify launched a shop skill for AI agents: once a buyer approves in the Shop app, the agent receives a single-use payment credential and can check out on any website. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke wrote: "Turn any existing Agent into the world's best personal shopper for you." (Tobi Lütke, 2026-10-13) Shopify engineer Ilya Grigorik filled in the mechanics: "buyer approves in Shop, your agent gets a single-use payment credential, and checks out anywhere on the web." (Ilya Grigorik, 2026-10-13) The skill covers search, adding to cart, Shop Pay checkout and order tracking. The part Shopify stresses is payment. After the buyer approves in Shop, the agent holds a one-time credential that expires once used. The thing to watch is whether any third-party agent publicly connects to the skill. There are no adoption or transaction figures, and "world's best" is marketing language. How we checked →

Concept illustration in two side-by-side panels: on the left, a hand in a striped sleeve holds a phone lettered SHOP at the bottom, its thumb pressing a dark button below grey lines on the screen, next to a sign on a post showing a green shopping-bag icon and the lettering SHOPIFY. On the right, a laptop sits on a desk in front of a pale pink circle, its screen showing a shopping-cart icon with grey lines on the left and, on the right, a speech bubble with grey lines above a red card with a chip and white lines.
