How we checked each item today

For readers who want to dig in. If you only want what happened, go back to Today.

This issue draws on our internal research brief from early October 7, the deep dive published in the small hours the same day, and last night's material. The one main-line item rechecks a judgment we wrote on August 8; the main evidence is SemiAnalysis's October 5 article and vendor announcements from April and September of this year. Both named-commentary items come from the same interview, published September 30 and read by us only today. The one unverified item is a paywalled report reposted on October 4, and the archive pick comes from our September 13 deep dive. We swept 470 pieces overnight, and this issue uses 7 outside sources with links you can check.

1. [Evidence update] (deep-dive recheck, October 7) We took apart our August judgment that "vendors subsidize heavy subscribers": by one firm's estimate, the same plan's gross margin runs from −369% to +6% depending on usage, so the losses sit with heavy users and the scarcer resource is compute

How we checked

"A tenth of revenue, 40% of compute" comes from SemiAnalysis alone; we read the public sections, not what sits behind the paywall. We went looking for a second source today and found none. ⚠️ PitchBook, a private-market data provider, and The Information report that Anthropic's company-wide gross margin is around 40%, far below the 92% API margin SemiAnalysis assumes. The two measure different things (the company-wide figure also covers free users, subscriptions and internal usage), and no public data yet shows where the gap comes from; if it comes mainly from subscriptions, the +6% at average utilization is too optimistic. ⚠️ Our analysis was produced with help from Anthropic's models, and Anthropic is one of the subscription vendors this item discusses.

What you are not getting today. What would most affect judgment is a second source's measurement of "subscriptions are a tenth of Anthropic's revenue and 40% of its compute"; we looked today and found none. Beyond that, we don't have The Information's body text, Anthropic's public listing documents, OpenAI's official reason for its September 29 allowance cut, or two South China Morning Post stories (Anthropic tightening access from Hong Kong; AI governance rules for Chinese banks), of which we saw only the headlines.

Sources & accounting

The past 24 hours. 470 new pieces came in from October 6 to 7: 230 academic papers, 137 social-platform posts, 50 other papers, 44 company and personal blog posts, 4 subscription newsletters, 3 company filings and 2 show transcripts. Of those 470, we read 229, filtered out 240 and left 1 unread; almost all of what we read was read by machine overnight, and none of it made today's body. Before today's deadline we separately read 5 social posts from October 4 that aren't among the 470 and used 1: Paul Triolo's repost, which led us to the interview in Named commentary and the report in the unverified strip. Today's judgments don't use the other 4 (Jesse Jenkins, Brett Adcock, Casey Handmer, Jigar Shah). To find a second source for "subscriptions are a tenth of revenue," we searched the US Securities and Exchange Commission's full-text search and found no public Anthropic listing document. We also checked the accounts of Wolf Street, a finance blog, and OfficeChai, an Indian tech news site, of the leaked draft; neither breaks revenue down by product (EDGAR full-text search (S-1 for "Anthropic, PBC"); Wolf Street, 2026-09-28; OfficeChai, 2026-09-29).

One-time backfill. No new one-time backfill today.

A note on source concentration. ⚠️ Every order-of-magnitude figure in main-line item 1 (a tenth of revenue, 40% of compute, −369% and +6%) comes from SemiAnalysis alone, which is also selling its own paid dashboard. ⚠️ Both named-commentary items come from the same interview, and all three new pieces of news reached us through posts by the same reposter, which we traced back to the originals. ⚠️ The unverified item rests on one outlet, behind a paywall, with body text via a repost. ⚠️ Our analysis was produced with help from Anthropic's models, and main-line item 1 and the unverified item both involve Anthropic directly.

The sources we track. Our long-term roster has 529 named sources: 302 on social platforms, 90 shows, 51 news outlets, 48 blogs, 48 paper authors and 46 newsletters, with the rest spread across earnings, keynotes and other channels. ⚠️ Those are counts of tracked sources, a different population from the 470 new pieces above; they can't be added or compared. Representative names: on social platforms, Ben Horowitz, Ethan Mollick, Gary Marcus and Teortaxes; among newsletters, SemiAnalysis, Zvi Mowshowitz and Import AI; among shows, Cognitive Revolution, Latent Space and ChinaTalk. This issue uses 7 outside sources in the body. We count only links the body actually cites that are not on our own domain, so it can't be compared with the 529 tracked sources either. Taiwanese sources: 7 new in September, 121 in total; Taiwanese media, Taiwanese companies' official channels and local Taiwanese reporters count, foreign outlets relaying Taiwanese media do not.
