Coinbase says its Qwen beats frontier AI; no results are out

Coinbase's CEO says Qwen3.5-9B, a 9-billion-parameter open model fine-tuned on Coinbase's own data, beats frontier models at fraud prevention

Concept illustration: on the left, a person in black clothing with a badge on a lanyard stands by a long counter, one hand in a pocket and the other on the keyboard of an orange-red laptop whose base is lettered "QWEN3.5-9B" and whose screen shows a speech-bubble icon, with a pale pink circle behind them. Further right on the same counter is a larger black laptop, also showing a speech-bubble icon, in front of a beige panel, and at the top right is a framed sign with a blue C-shaped ring and the lettering "COINBASE".

Why this matters to you: Pick one high-volume task with clear rules and record your current model's error rate and cost per call as a baseline.

Coinbase's CEO says Qwen3.5-9B, fine-tuned on internal data, beat frontier models at fraud prevention (Armstrong, 2026-10-11); Benaich replied that it's comparing against an old model (Benaich, 2026-10-11). OpenRouter self-reports that open models carry over 62% of its token usage while 73% of spending still goes to closed models (OpenRouter, 2026-09-22); Laskin says typical enterprises start without fine-tuning (No Priors, 2026-10-09).

Our reading: fine-tuning means taking an existing model and training it one more round on your own data so it specializes in one job. This is the first time we've read a named company say publicly that it handed a specialized task to an open model it fine-tuned itself. So far, though, it's one company's word. If the approach holds up, the pressure lands on closed-model APIs billed by usage; the number to watch is whether OpenRouter's next closed-model share of spending falls below 73%. A falling share could also just mean closed models cut their own prices; that's our guess, and OpenRouter's post doesn't separate price from volume.

Not proven yet: the post names neither the rival model nor the metric; Coinbase hasn't published results How we checked →
