Alphabet's quarterly report shows US$560.8 billion of signed Google Cloud contracts not yet booked as revenue, a little over half due within two years

Why it matters: Our inference: Alphabet's strain is cash today, not demand. Its third-quarter equipment spending ran above the cash its operations brought in, while Google Cloud already holds US$560.8 billion of signed contracts not yet delivered.
Alphabet filed its third-quarter 10-Q with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 29.
The report says that as of September 30, customer contracts held US$567.7 billion of committed amounts not yet recognized as revenue, US$560.8 billion of it at Google Cloud. Alphabet expects a little over 55% to be recognized within the next 24 months and the rest after that (Alphabet 10-Q, 2026-10-29). The earnings filing a day earlier put Google Cloud's third-quarter revenue at US$30.7 billion (Alphabet 8-K, 2026-10-28), so the US$560.8 billion is about 18 times one quarter of cloud revenue (our calculation).
SecondSource's October 29 issue, "Alphabet's free cash flow is negative for a second straight quarter; it sold bonds and issued stock", reported that Alphabet's equipment spending in the third quarter exceeded the cash its operations brought in, and that in the same quarter Alphabet sold US$28.7 billion of bonds and issued new stock. The 10-Q shows the demand side: the business is already signed. Contract commitments are work not yet done; they become revenue only as Alphabet delivers, and they aren't cash on hand.
Not proven yet: unrecognized contract value becomes revenue only as work is delivered, and isn't cash How we checked →
Next to watch: whether unrecognized contract value keeps growing or flattens in Alphabet's fourth-quarter report, and whether free cash flow turns positive. If unrecognized contracts shrink next quarter, the inference that cash, not demand, is the strain no longer holds.
