SecondSourceJudgment rebuilt from primary sources

How we checked every item today except "Also happened"

For readers who want to dig in. What happened, in brief, is on the Today tab.

This issue draws on material from November 3 to early November 4; main-line item 1 is also checked against SpaceX's July 30 announcement and October 20 earnings call. Main-line items 2 and 5 and the Chips & semiconductors item are November 2 news: yesterday's email edition didn't go out, so they appear here. The From the archive item comes from a SecondSource call of October 25. Last night's collection took in 705 pieces, and this issue uses 23 outside sources with checkable links; the later sections also draw on material from the past week.

1. [Today] SemiAnalysis: SpaceX turned a plant into a data center in 91 days, but its Memphis-area campus will keep under half its on-site power from July 2027

Not proven yet: only SemiAnalysis has estimated the rated capacity and the shortfall

How we checked

Two local TV stations reported the turbine-removal announcement. Mississippi's WLBT carried a story from Memphis station WMC, and Memphis station WREG wrote its own; the turbine counts and dates match, and both report the same company announcement. The rated capacity, the shortfall, the grid applications and the substation date all come from SemiAnalysis's public article; the agreement's full text and the Tennessee Valley Authority records are also known only through SemiAnalysis. Musk's words come only from Fireside Alpha's summary. The 13 GW is SpaceX's target, not capacity already built.

2. [This week] (event date Nov 2) Oracle files for US$10 billion of stock and US$10 billion of bonds, the same amounts as the funding cap it announced five days earlier

Not proven yet: the prospectuses don't say whether this offering counts toward the cap

How we checked

The prospectuses, the investor-day filing and the quarterly report are all statutory filings Oracle made with the SEC; the February plan comes from a press release on Oracle's investor relations site. All of this evidence comes from Oracle's own documents, with no third-party corroboration. In the preliminary prospectuses filed on November 2, the share price, the coupon on each tranche and the final amounts are still blank. The cap is one Oracle set for itself and carries no legal force.

3. [Today] AMD's third-quarter data-center revenue rose 97% from a year earlier, and AMD names five customers running its first Helios racks

Not proven yet: the release doesn't say at what scale the five customers run Helios

How we checked

The figures and the customer list come from the results press release on AMD's investor relations site; all of it is self-reported by AMD. The full 10-Q quarterly report AMD files with the SEC comes later, and none of the five customers has been confirmed independently. The fourth-quarter US$17 billion is guidance, not revenue already booked.

4. [Today] On a laptop, Simon Willison got the open-weight Qwen 3.8 27B to name the game behind three of four small networks from their weights

Not proven yet: one person, four questions run once each, one open-weight model

How we checked

Simon Willison ran each of the four questions only once, with no repeated sampling. The paper's claims come from its abstract as cited by Simon Willison; the abstract doesn't describe the method or controls for the weight-editing half. Honnibal's and Goedecke's criticisms are both as relayed by Simon Willison.

5. [This week] (event date Nov 2) OpenAI tells a reporter ChatGPT search volume is about a fifth of Google's; SEO tool maker Ahrefs put it at about 12% of Google's in February

Not proven yet: the fifth is OpenAI's own figure, and the post doesn't say how it's counted

How we checked

The fifth comes from Kantrowitz's post; it is a figure OpenAI gave Kantrowitz about itself, with no second source. The Ahrefs estimate comes from the original Ahrefs blog post, and the way queries are classified is the author Stox's judgment. The Google chief business officer's remark comes from Latent Space's summary.

[This week] (event date Nov 2) Marvell will buy optical-component maker Lumentum in an all-stock deal at an enterprise value of US$115 billion; closing isn't expected until the first half of 2028.

How we checked

It narrows the guided range from plus or minus 5% to plus or minus 2% but gives no dollar figure (Marvell 8-K, 2026-11-02).

[Looking back] (SecondSource call, October 25) Shrinking the data AI models hold during a conversation hasn't cut AI chips' memory demand; SecondSource's reading is that the demand has moved.

How we checked
